Navy Veterans Benefits

After serving your country in the Navy, you have returned to homeport and to civilian life. Yet you will always be a Navy veteran. And if your years of Navy service left you with a disability or chronic health problem, you deserve the benefits and medical care offered by a grateful nation. But gaining access to Navy veterans’ benefits can be slow and frustrating.

We can help. For decades, Jan Dils, Attorneys at Law, have helped Navy veterans obtain the VA benefits to which they are entitled. We focus on working with veterans because we respect the service and sacrifice that veterans have given our nation. As part of our personalized service, we do not charge veterans unless we are successful in securing their disability benefits.

Several types of benefits are available to Navy veterans for disabilities related to injuries or diseases that developed during active military service or were aggravated by military service. For example, Navy veterans are at higher risk of developing certain kinds of respiratory-related diseases because of asbestos, toxic fumes and vapors commonly found in Navy ships and shipyards.

Certain Navy occupations, such as hull maintenance technicians, utilities men and boatswain’s mates, increase the risk of exposure to hazardous materials. As one example, deck grinders who served on aircraft carriers from the 1970s through the 1990s may have undiagnosed occupational lung disease, sarcoidosis, from grinding anti-skid material on the decks of aircraft carriers.

Vietnam-era Navy veterans who served on ships and vessels including landing craft, swift boats, patrol boats and destroyers that conducted operations on inland waterways and brown water rivers and delta areas in Vietnam may be presumed to have exposure to Agent Orange and herbicides. And Navy construction workers (Seabees) who served in the Gulf War report higher incidences of multi-symptom illness.

Disability benefits available to Navy veterans include benefits for:

The basic disability benefit ranges from $123 to $2,613 per month, depending on the extent of the disability and the disability rating. If you disagree with the rating of your disability, you can write a letter to your local VA stating that you disagree with the rating decision and want to appeal. A veterans’ disability lawyer at Jan Dils, Attorneys at Law, can assist in preparing the appeal.

Establishing the right to disability compensation related to exposure to toxic chemicals such as Agent Orange can be a time-consuming process. But even if you’ve been denied before, you may qualify now with the Department of Veterans Affairs expansion of eligibility. The lawyers at Jan Dils, Attorneys at Law, are skilled at helping Navy veterans establish their disability at every step in the appeals process.
